It’s stumbling across something accidentally that is nonetheless of interest to you. The web is much better at capturing that mix of surprise and relevance than book stacks or print encyclopedias. Does everyone use the web this way? Of course not. But it’s much more of a mainstream pursuit than randomly exploring encyclopedias or library stacks ever was. That’s the irony of the debate: the thing that is being mourned has actually gone from a fringe experience to a much more commonplace one in the culture.
